The Story in Every Sequence

The Story in Every Sequence
by Nicola Colville

A yoga class is more than a collection of poses. It is a story, a journey that unfolds in subtle rhythms, each movement flowing into the next. How a teacher sequences a practice — the order of poses, the way breath meets motion, the pauses between effort and ease — shapes not only the experience on the mat but also the way we inhabit the body and the mind.

Sequencing is, at its heart, an art of balance and intention. A gentle warm-up opens space, preparing the body and mind for the work ahead. Standing poses build strength, grounding us in our own stability. Twists and folds invite release, letting tension unravel in the quiet moments between breaths. Finally, the class closes with stillness, a pause that allows the story to settle, the body and mind carrying the echoes of the journey forward.

I am often struck by how much this mirrors life itself. Our days, like a yoga sequence, have beginnings, middles, and endings — moments of energy, moments of pause, moments of reflection. Some days we move gracefully from one pose to the next, other days we stumble or linger longer than we intended. Yet even when the flow feels uncertain, every step builds upon the last, each moment connecting to the one before, shaping the whole of the experience.

Sequencing in yoga teaches patience and presence. A thoughtful sequence encourages awareness: noticing where the body feels open or restricted, sensing where attention lingers, and learning to trust that the order of things is not random. Life offers the same lessons. We cannot always control the events that come our way, but we can attend to how we move through them, how we transition from challenge to ease, from effort to rest.

For teachers, sequencing is an act of care. Each choice — which pose comes next, how long to hold it, how to bridge one posture to another — is made with attention to the student’s experience. In our own lives, we are both student and teacher, shaping the flow of our days, the rhythms of our relationships, and the narrative of our personal growth.

So, next time you roll out your mat, notice how the sequence unfolds — the beginnings, the endings, the pauses, and the transitions. Feel the rise and fall of energy, the pauses that invite reflection, and the transitions that guide you forward.

Life, like a well-crafted class, moves in its own rhythm, shaped by every breath, every step, and every mindful choice.
